Recent Hydrogen and Ammonia MoUs in Japan

In June 2023, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) updated its Basic Hydrogen Strategy, aiming for over 150 trillion yen in public and private investments in green transformation (GX) over the next decade, with an initial 20 trillion yen in support. The strategy sets ambitious hydrogen consumption goals: 3 million tons annually by 2030, 12 million tons by 2040, and 20 million tons by 2050. It also targets a 15 GW global water electrolysis capacity by 2030. Additionally, Japan has passed the Hydrogen Society Promotion Act, offering a 15-year subsidy for domestically produced and imported low-carbon hydrogen, prioritizing power generation, iron, and chemical production industries.
